Ullswater, The Lake District

Dates of operation: 1955 – present
Number of young people through its doors: approximately 260,000
Number of young people served last year: 8,500
Centre description:
Set in 18 acres of woodland at the heart of Wordsworth country, the Ullswater centre is based on the north shore of the lake. In fact the centre has the largest lake of Lake District National Park on its doorstep, as well as some of the highest mountains in England. On the lake there’s a boathouse and jetty, as well as a community canoe centre.
Some participants might canoe or kayak on the lake then bivvy in the centre’s high mountain lodge as part of an expedition, nestling under Helvellyn - one of The Lake District's highest peaks.
The main house is a large Georgian residence built in the early 19th century and bought by The Outward Bound Trust in 1954.
